Good question. In short, because they take a big slice of what you give. Patreon takes around 8–12% of your pledge upfront, and YouTube takes 30% (not even counting extra fees from for example Apple). The platforms take a big cut of your pledge before it reaches me. That’s why I built my own membership platform. To make sure as much of your support as possible goes directly where it’s supposed to.
